Education

Companion Star's mission, consistent with our deep belief in the force of the arts to transform lives, includes education initiatives that recognize and nurture talent in both our local community and the global community. Companion Star's programs range from workshops for teens and children to opportunities for emerging artists in our professional productions.

Community Youth Program

In July of 2007 Companion Star donated a six-week trial program to the Boys & Girls Club of Bellport. The pilot program, based on the same principles Companion Star uses to create shows, consisted of improvisations involving singing and acting that were used to develop a public showing of the work. Following Companion Star’s performance development format, the improvisations were filmed for use in evaluating effectiveness and to provide a record of achievement for the boys and girls.

The response from the community was so positive that in September 2007, a new eight-week educational program for the Boys & Girls Club was initiated with space graciously donated by Frank P. Long School. Companion Star received partial funding for this program from the South Country Education Foundation.

In 2008 Companion Star was asked to expand and further develop the program. The 2008 program offers classes in both the spring and the fall and will result in a fully staged play, Beauty IS a Beast, with participants between the ages 6 to 18. We are also offering two teens from the Club scholarships for voice study this year.

University Masters Intern Program

Companion Star is currently in discussions with several universities to create an intern program for university-level graduate students. The program will offer theater graduate students the opportunity to cover roles in Companion Star productions and to participate in the design and technical arts of our projects.
